I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The smokey flavor infused into the pizza truly lives up to the "coal-fired" name.
Food I've tried: (* = my favorite)
- MEATBALL PIZZA ($21): I loved that this pizza had little mounds of ricotta on it, as the creaminess pairs well with the crunch of the crust. The crust is perfectly thin, which balances well with the topping, and the sauce is not overly sweet. The meatballs had a perfect amount of seasoning (not too heavy), and it allowed me to enjoy the other flavors of the pizza.
- BABY BELLA PIZZA* ($20): this was the most surprising of the menu. As soon as you bite into it, you get a wonderful aroma of truffle oil that pairs amazingly well with the mushroom flavor. The truffle flavor goes away halfway through the munching process so as not to be overwhelming. Like the meatball pizza, the other elements of the pizza (the dough, crust, sauce) were great as well.
- COAL FIRED WINGS ($16 - 1 lb): they taste like a healthier version of fried chicken. The chicken itself is very crispy as the skin is charred (in a good way) with a lot of smoky flavor. The meat is a bit on the drier side, but I did appreciate that it came with a mountain of caramelized onions which paired well with the flavor.
- BRUSSEL SPROUTS ($9): I loved that this dish stayed true to the brussel sprout flavor. Unlike other places, it wasn't mixed in with a lot of sauce and it was not overly seasoned. Like the wings, it had a lovely smoky flavor.
Atmosphere:
- When I visited, the restaurant was pretty empty so it was nice and quiet.
Service:
- Very friendly waiter.
Overall:
- Great charred flavor especially in the appetizers. Price is pretty standard for a sit-down pizza place, a bit pricier than takeout pizza ... but you can't really compare the flavor of takeout pizza to this place.
