I couldn't visit Providence without trying Newport Creamery. I heard about the Awful Awfuls from many Providence locals.
Food I've tried:
- My rating is solely based on the Awful Awful that I tried. I know they sell a variety of other desserts, and other foods but I can't comment on that as I did not try them.
- MOCHA AWFUL AWFUL ($5 - junior): I appreciated that it was not overly sweet. The one thing that did bother me (hence the yellow rating) about it was there was that specific fake preservative taste that comes with syrups that was pretty prevalent with every sip. In looking at the construction process, I noticed that they blended vanilla ice cream with the syrup of your choice (so mocha syrup for mocha?). Not sure what syrup they are using, but I believe the preservative taste is coming from them. I think it would have been better if they just used mocha ice cream rather than relying on the syrup for the specific flavor. Asides from that, when I first got the junior size my initial reaction was this is a very small cup for $5. But given the richness of the milkshake, I was very satisfied with the portion once I finished the milkshake. The other detail was that they give you a regular straw with your milkshake. I wished it was one of those fat milkshake straws instead, as it took a lot of inspiratory effort for me to drink the thick shake through the straw.
Atmosphere:
- There is a counter at the front that you can order to-go. There are also a decent number of seats.
Service:
- The staff was friendly.
Overall:
- Pretty standard, not overly sweet milk shakes. Price is higher than fast food dessert, but comparable to other dessert shops. For the flavor that I got, maybe a smidge on the higher side.
